Work backward from the festival calendar

Diwali is the peak, but the season really runs from Raksha Bandhan through Navratri, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj. Wholesale supply tightens as the peak approaches — popular items like kaju katli, motichoor ladoo, and gift-box assortments sell out at the distributor level first. Place your main festival order four to six weeks before Diwali, and confirm gift-box and specialty items even earlier. A second, smaller top-up order in the final week covers whatever is running hot.

The category checklist

A strong festival counter covers five bases: gifting classics (kaju katli, kaju rolls, assorted gift boxes), crowd-pleasers (gulab jamun, rasmalai, rasgulla — Nanak tins and trays move on name recognition), regional favorites for your customer base (Bengali cham cham and sandesh, South Indian Mysore pak, Punjabi pinni), bulk trays for temples, offices, and party orders, and diyas-and-dry-fruit adjacency — shoppers buying sweets are also buying pooja items, so merchandise them together.

Fresh counter vs. frozen backup

Frozen and shelf-stable mithai are what make festival volumes manageable: bulk frozen trays of rasmalai, gulab jamun, and barfi can be staged ahead and moved to the fresh counter as demand builds, instead of gambling everything on one delivery window. Thaw under refrigeration, rotate strictly by date, and never display more than a day or two of stock at room temperature.

Display and pricing that move volume

Festival shoppers buy with their eyes: full trays outsell half-empty ones, so consolidate as trays run down. Price gift boxes at two or three clear tiers rather than per-piece math, and station impulse items — small ladoo packs, soan papdi — at the register. Stores that take pre-orders for gift boxes a few weeks out convert their biggest customers before competitors can.

The short version

Order your main festival load 4–6 weeks early, cover gifting, crowd-pleasers, and your community's regional favorites, use frozen bulk trays as your safety stock, and merchandise sweets next to pooja items.
