Order three weeks ahead
Onam falls in late August or September, with Thiruvonam as the main day. Order about three weeks before. Kerala associations hold sadya events on nearby weekends, so ask them for headcounts early — they order in bulk.
The sadya checklist
- Kerala matta (kuthari) rice — the base of every sadya, in 20 lb bags.
- Papadam and chips — Lijjat papad, banana wafers (Balaji) and sharkara varatti-style sweets.
- Coconut — Viswas frozen grated coconut for avial and thoran, plus coconut oil.
- Frozen vegetables — Viswas tapioca, jackfruit and elayada, plus drumstick and yam (Viswas, Bhaiyaji) for sambar and avial.
- Payasam — jaggery, rice, cashews, raisins and ghee.
- Ready to heat — Viswas parottas and Minute Kitchen South Indian combos for shoppers who skip the cooking.
Caterers and associations
Sadya caterers need consistent bulk rice, coconut and frozen vegetables. Lock in quantities two weeks out and schedule delivery for the day before each event.
The short version
Order 3 weeks early, lead with matta rice, papadam, banana chips and coconut, add frozen Kerala vegetables and payasam ingredients, and lock in association orders early. Our team can tell you exactly what is available for your route this season.
